IV Conscious Sedation

What is IV conscious sedation?

Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation is a relaxation method for patients who struggle with dental anxiety, a severe gag reflex, or another issue that could interfere with necessary dental care. If you’ve thought about delaying the dental care you need because you’re worried or scared, IV conscious sedation can relax you and make it possible to get the care you need now.

IV conscious sedation is sometimes called twilight sedation because it gives you an extremely comfortable and relaxed feeling that often causes you to doze lightly during a dental procedure. You can still communicate with Dr. Singh while under IV conscious sedation. Most patients have no memory of their dental procedure after IV conscious sedation.

How does IV conscious sedation work?

Dr. Singh administers the sedative through a tube, directly into a vein. IV sedation goes into effect almost instantly because the medication goes straight into your bloodstream. Dr. Singh begins the dental procedure only after you’re completely relaxed and ready. He can adjust the sedation level as needed to ensure a comfortable experience.

Before Dr. Singh does any drilling or other dental work, he always numbs the treatment area thoroughly with local anesthesia. You’ll breathe on your own throughout the procedure, and Dr. Singh and other Tompkins Dental team members closely monitor you the whole time.

How do I prepare for IV conscious sedation?

A member of the Tompkins Dental team gives you preparation instructions at least a few days before your procedure. Usually, with IV conscious sedation you must fast for eight hours before your procedure. If you currently take any medication, give Dr. Singh the full list ahead of time as you might need to stop taking certain drugs temporarily.

You should also stop smoking at least 24 hours before your sedation. Also, ask a family member or friend to drive you to and from your appointment at Tompkins Dental. You’ll be drowsy after IV conscious sedation, which makes it unsafe to drive. The effects wear off over a few hours, so plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day.
